Datel Memory Card Transfer Kit Review
Written by Brakken April 2006
Introduction
Welcome to another ISO-420 Certified Review of one of Datel’s innovative products. This time around
I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing their XBOX 360 Transfer kit which in a nutshell allows you to
backup and restore your XBOX 360 Memory Card’s to your computers hard drive for safe keeping. Datel
advertises that the product can be used to ‘share’ saved data via the Internet, but read on to find
out why this is currently only a backup and restore solution.

Installation
Once you’ve managed to tear the professional packing the device comes in apart to get to the contents
it’s a snap to install. Simply install the software on the Mini CD and then plug the Transfer Adapter
into a spare USB slot and your computer will recognize it and then install the necessary drivers for
it. I noticed it installed a system device and an USB device and I’m not sure why.
Usage & Conclusion
Using the device couldn’t be any easier. Plug your memory card into it and then load up Datel’s software.
Once it’s loaded you’ll be presented with a screen with three tabs – one for the Memory Card you have
in the device, another for any image(s) you have stored on your PC’s hard drive and lastly one options tab.
To backup a memory card click on the “360 Memory Card” tab and then type in a name for the image and a
description. I was a bit disappointed that you can’t type in a description with line breaks as all you
have is a single straight line to type the text with. It would have been nice if you could put a name
of each save game you have on a separate line, but instead I abbreviated them. Oh well.
Once your image is on your computer’s hard drive you can navigate to the “Hard Drive” tab to manage it.
Sadly, all you can do is rename the image – there is currently no way to open the image up and manipulate
the files which are contained within it. This was really disappointing as you might want to trade Saved
Games for only a certain title, but currently all you can do is swap the entire image of the card with
your friends. The whole “Trading on the Internet” sales pitch seems a bit dull now. The only thing you
can edit within this menu is the name and description of the memory card image.
To restore the image select “to mem” - this will put the entire image back on your memory card. When
backing up or restoring an image you’ll have to wait around sixty seconds, which isn’t that bad
(around 1 megabyte per second).
Lastly, there is an “options” tab which will give you some copyright information for the program
and also let you “check for updates”. I’m hoping when they do update their software there will be
a way to manage the data within the image otherwise I’d say this device is for backup purposes
only and not for sharing save data with your friends.
